By: Elizabeth Katsion, Student Nutritionist As the semester comes to a close, the hours spent in the library begin to greatly outweigh those sleeping. Even when I get a chance to go to bed early, sometimes the stress of the upcoming weeks keeps me up. Here are some foods that will help you fall asleep faster and help you achieve a more efficient sleep. Include these foods at dinner, or as a snack if you're looking into a midday power nap to power you through.

By: Emma Slattery, Student NutritionistWith 2 weeks until the start of finals students are more stressed, the weather is colder, and campus is becoming a breeding ground of cold and flu viruses. The last thing anyone wants when studying is to be dragged down by a pesky cold or laid up in bed with the flu. Look for foods with these 5 nutrients to give your immune system the support that it needs to support you! By: Emma Slattery, Student NutritionistIt's that time of year. Term papers, midterms, presentations and projects are piling up while everyone counts down the days until winter break. Enjoy some motivation to make it though the last few weeks of the semester!
By: Emma Slattery, Student NutritionistBreakfast tends to be one of the most controversial meals. Despite the age old saying that "Breakfast is the most important meal of the day" many people - students especially - skip out on eating in the morning.
By Emma Slattery, Student NutritionistCollege Students are notorious for dealing with massive amounts of stress and anxiety. This election season has only escalated it for many students on campus. In addition to clubs, jobs, school work, labs, and exams, students have been voting and trying to pay attention to national issues. If anyone is like me, they're on 5 cups of coffee to make it through the day, craving cookies and chips, and struggling to stay awake in lecture.
By: Jillian Pancio, Student Nutritionist Thanksgiving- everyone's favorite Thursday of the year, is right around the corner! Have you ever wondered why after eating a delicious Thanksgiving meal with turkey, cranberry sauce, stuffing and much more, you feel exhausted? Well if you have, it isn't just because you are so stuffed, there is a reason! Turkey contains L-Tryptophan which is an essential amino acid. An essential amino acid is one that your body can not produce, so it must be obtained through your diet. Tryptophan is used to make a B vitamin- niacin, and is needed to produce serotonin. Serotonin is used to make melatonin, which is a hormone that helps control your sleep cycles. By: Elizabeth Katsion, Student Nutritionist If you have been following this blog since the beginning, you may remember some posts entitled "Ask the Vegetarian" where I debunked many myths of a vegetarian diet. However, over the summer I made the jump to veganism. I have always loved food documentaries on Netflix, but Cowspriacy really struck a chord. This film focused on the environmental impacts of a meat-eaters diet vs a vegan diet, and it was eye-opening. A vegan saves 1,100 gallons of water, 30 sq ft of forested land, 45 pounds of grain and 20 pounds of carbon dioxide everyday. This convinced me. As a vegetarian I was still reducing my impact, but I wanted to do better. While I know the vegan diet is not for everyone, I still highly suggest the movie as it presents a lot of valuable information on the large effect our diets can have on the environment. I won't try to convince you, but its always good to keep your options open to be more informed. So from now, this re-occuring post will be "Ask the Vegan", hopefully you still enjoy! Maybe try one of the vegan meals from the vegan station this week and reduce your carbon footprint!
