By Sina D'Amico, Dietetic Intern With a Cava location so close to campus, it’s hard to resist treating yourself after a long day of classes and responsibilities. For some of you, Cava might be a brand-new restaurant that you’re just not sure how to navigate. This is how it was for me - there’s no Cava’s where I’m from, so moving here I was in for a delicious surprise.
Although the bowls I would see my friends getting looked so good, I wasn’t sure to build my own bowl. The first time I went was a disaster to say the least. Not that it didn’t taste good, I just was not sure what combination of items paired well together. I stuck to the basics - chicken, brown rice, and so many veggies. But true Cava fans will know that the dips are what make or break the bowl, and that’s what I needed to learn. By Caty Saffarinia, Dietetic Intern Whether yourself, a friend, or family member have been affected by inflammation, there are foods that have anti-inflammatory properties. Whether the inflammation is short-term and acute or long-term and chronic, these foods can help combat inflammation that affects our day-to-day lives. Inflammation is the body’s way of defending itself when the immune system has become compromised. It is caused by foreign organisms - bacteria, viruses, wounds, allergens, toxins, etc. - that are introduced into the body activating the immune system for response. The body becomes intermittently inflamed when it is fighting off the foreign organism to preserve your health. Inflammation is a normal body response to promote healing. By Sina D'Amico, Dietetic Intern Air fryers are the new craze – you’ve probably seen them all over your favorite food Instagram pages. There are the classic items that can be air-fried such as wings and fries, but the more out of the box you’re willing to be, the more you’ll get your money’s worth out of your purchase. The ease and simplicity of the air fryer is not the only reason to get on this trend - there’s also some health benefits (like getting to enjoy your favorite fried foods without all that added oil and grease). Air fryers require a lot less oil compared to typical deep fryers, making your dishes healthier for you and your friends to enjoy. This cooking product offers a way to still get that crispy food without all of the added fats from the cooking process. Instead of sticking to the basics, use these options to get creative with cooking in an air fryer. By Caty Saffarinia, Dietetic Intern Getting enough sleep is important for your overall health. Sometimes, life can get in the way of getting a good night’s sleep. When this happens, there are ways to make sure that the sleep you do get is quality and uninterrupted. Sleeping is an essential part of life. But it can be easy for some and more challenging for others. For example, you might find that it takes more than 20 minutes for you to fall asleep once you get into bed. While your neighbor might fall asleep as soon as his/her head hits their pillow. These two situations are normal. By Sina D'Amico, Dietetic Intern Who doesn’t love a good serving of French fries on a Saturday or after a long, stressful day of classes? I’d be lying if I’d say I don’t fall into this category. But have you ever thought about swapping your regular, greasy fries for veggies? I know this doesn’t sound as appealing as you might think but hear me out. It’s a new year and you might have told yourself you’re interested in adding more vegetables into your diet. So instead of going the generic (and kind of boring) route, spice your dishes up a little by making those veggies into fries. |
