By Emma Slattery, Student NutritionistDietary fads regularly fall in and out of fashion. Juice cleanses, South Beach Diet, Atkins, and other similar diets all have their moment in the spotlight before nutritional science catches up, runs some studies, and proves the harmful aspects of a dietary pattern. By Emma Slattery, Student NutritionistWhile not every college student is caffeine dependent, a great many of us are. Early mornings, late nights, and tough assignments drive many students to lean on caffeine. The only problem is that as the weather gets warm- or in this case HOT- a hot cup of coffee just isn't that good anymore. I'll come into work still sweating from the walk from off campus housing, and grabbing that steaming hot cup of coffee from the dining hall is just gross when I'm already hot and sweaty. It's just not as satisfying as cold summer beverages. Lucky enough for us, some very smart person invented cold coffee! A beautiful way to get a caffeine fix without raising your body temp in the summer heat. There are 3 main types of iced coffee to either make yourself or purchase before the weather cools down:

Although it is originally Italian, us Americans have made pizza into an American classic. New York style, Chicago deep dish, Hawaiian pizza- all variations, all across the country. Yet despite its popularity- or maybe because of its popularity- pizza has a terrible reputation for being unhealthy. Which is absolutely wrong. Pizza is not only delicious but also can be a healthful part of a balanced diet. Now, I say "can be healthful" and not "is inherently healthful" because not all pizzas are equal. Mac and cheese pizza, a specialty offered by Slices on Route 1 next to campus, may not be the most healthful option. It's not a wrong option if you're really craving mac and cheese pizza or want to try it once, but it's not the most healthful pizza option. Back to the main point though, PIZZA CAN BE HEALTHFUL! Whether you make the pizza yourself, buy it frozen, or order it from a chain, you can certainly make a healthful and delicious meal out of pizza. |
