By Sina D'Amico, Dietetic Intern Air fryers are the new craze – you’ve probably seen them all over your favorite food Instagram pages. There are the classic items that can be air-fried such as wings and fries, but the more out of the box you’re willing to be, the more you’ll get your money’s worth out of your purchase. The ease and simplicity of the air fryer is not the only reason to get on this trend - there’s also some health benefits (like getting to enjoy your favorite fried foods without all that added oil and grease). Air fryers require a lot less oil compared to typical deep fryers, making your dishes healthier for you and your friends to enjoy. This cooking product offers a way to still get that crispy food without all of the added fats from the cooking process. Instead of sticking to the basics, use these options to get creative with cooking in an air fryer. Cauliflower Gnocchi You’ve probably already jumped on the Trader Joe’s cauliflower gnocchi craze, so why not make them in the air fryer? I’m always trying to find a new way to make this frozen item crispy and as much as cooking them in the oven helps, it’s still not enough. Throwing a bag in the air fryer is going to give these gnocchi that much-needed crunch you’ve been searching for. Breakfast Potatoes Don’t think you’ll ever be able to make breakfast potatoes as good as your favorite restaurant because you can’t get them to be as crispy? Well look no further because your air fryer will be the solution. This will give you the perfect crisp on your breakfast potatoes that you’ll think you’re eating at your favorite diner. Brussels Sprouts (or any veggies) Roasting brussels sprouts in the oven has been the solution to achieve that perfect crisp. But sometimes this veggie just ends up too burnt or soggy and doesn’t quite give you that crunch. This is where the air fryer comes up - season your Brussels sprouts however you want, throw them in and be left with a dish that offers that crunch and the flavor you’re looking for. Apple Chips If you’re looking to enjoy this snack in a more budget-friendly way, it might not be a bad idea to use the air fryer to come up with a homemade option. All you’ll need is apples (cut into chip-like slices) and some seasoning (like cinnamon), and you’re good to go. Buffalo Cauliflower Wings Another cauliflower item that has been gaining more popularity is buffalo cauliflower wings. And again, each time I’ve tried making them they don’t turn out as crispy as I would hope when baking them in the oven. You won’t have to prepare this item any different, just stick them into the air fryer and you’ll have the crispy buffalo cauliflower wings you’ve been dying for. Even if none of these items sound good, the options are endless of what you can make. Try them all and see what you like!
