By Alexis Mateer, Dietetic Intern A new Nutrition Facts Label is coming! A few years ago the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) published a new set of rules and guidelines for Nutrition Facts Labels. Food manufacturers must comply with these new guidelines, and the mandatory compliance dates are approaching fast. January 1, 2020 is the mandatory compliance date for manufacturers with annual food sales of $10 million or more. This means that these food manufacturers will have to have the new, updated Nutrition Facts Label on all of their products by January 1, 2020. Manufacturers with annual food sales totaling less than $10 million have until January 1, 2021 to comply. Why is this happening? The FDA wants consumers to be able to make better, more informed food choices. New information and evidence has comes out all the time in the nutrition world. Our food labels need to reflect this science. So what do you need to know before then? I want to highlight some key changes in the labeling.
Keep your eyes peeled for this new label! You will be seeing more and more of it over the next year or two.
