By: Boriana Roumenova, Student Nutritionist As we settle into our school semester routines after a hot, fun-filled summer one aspect that changes is our eating habits. While some students returned to their meal plans, looking forward to a year of unique new menu items, others may have taken the plunge into home cooking now that they have a residence with a kitchen. Either way, every student should be able to access quality and nutritious food products to support their health during their busy lives. Students might not know that the University’s Farmers Market offers fresh produce and handmade products right on campus every week! This semester kicked off with its first fall farmer’s market on August 30th and it was more popular than ever! Despite the blazing heat we’ve had recently, students continue to flock to Tawes Plaza every Wednesday to stock up on fresh seasonal veggies, delectable fruits, fresh bakery bread, and more. Keep reading to learn how you can take advantage of this event and what to expect. Why You Should Shop Farmers Market ProduceAs students, our lives can get extremely hectic. We often struggle to find time for our mental and physical health. If you’re wondering whether visiting the Farmer’s Market is worth your precious time, consider this: fresh, local produce is actually more nutritious than food that is packaged and shipped to grocery stores. Fresh fruits and veggies tend to have a higher nutritional value because they’re picked at peak ripeness and sold locally instead of being processed. In addition to the health benefits of shopping at Farmer’s Markets, doing so has several economic advantages. Since local sellers have much lower shipping expenses and foods that are in season are typically in higher supply, they also tend to be less expensive. Buying locally also supports the community by stimulating the agriculture industry and small businesses in your area, and generating jobs. Your shopping choices can even have a global impact. Buying from local Farmer’s Markets helps lower the significant time and energy costs of transporting out-of-season produce and reduces the harmful impact of transport-associated emissions on our environment.
