By: Julia Dugas, Dietetic InternDuring the holidays, your health may be the last thing on your mind. Most people indulge for a few weeks and then fall into the “New Years Resolution” trap of fad dieting and restricting food or calories. There are ways to navigate the holidays so you feel refreshed and energized after the New Year, but still get to enjoy yourself. Treat Yourself… in Moderation This time of year, there are temptations everywhere. It is important to treat yourself to things you truly enjoy, but exercise moderation and don’t overdo it. Allow yourself to have that piece of pie, but maybe make it a smaller piece than you would usually take. Get your favorite seasonal coffee drink from Starbucks, but try a small. Allow yourself to have things you enjoy, but don’t let your eyes be bigger than your stomach. Exercise Even though you have a break from classes, that doesn’t mean you have tons of free time. It can be hard to make time for exercise when you are traveling and out of your normal routine. Exercising regularly will help you stay energized and feeling good throughout the holidays, no need to wait until the first of the year! Try HIIT (high intensity interval training) workouts to get your heart rate up and a great workout in a short amount of time. Relax Sometimes we forget to set aside time for relaxation. Try designating a day or two during break (or more) just for relaxing. You could do yoga, catch up on books (not textbooks) that you’ve been wanting to read or even binge watch Netflix. You made it through another semester, now give yourself a break and enjoy some down time. Don’t Overschedule When traveling home for the holidays, it can be tempting to make plans with everyone you don’t see on a regular basis. While it is great to catch up with extended family and old friends from high school, keep your self-care in mind. During the school year, you may not have much time to relax, so make sure you use this time off wisely. Your friends and family know that college is exhausting and will understand if you need the time to rest up for the new semester. As you know, winter break always flies by. Use some of this time just for you and set yourself up for a great start to next semester. Happy Holidays!
