By: Emma Slattery, Student NutritionistA sweet tooth can be relentless. It craves the high sugar and high fat foods that you know you shouldn't have. It sees the Oreo cake across the diner and wants that, needs that. A sweet tooth wants the double chocolate muffin for breakfast, a cookie with lunch, and a cake after dinner. Depriving the sweet tooth only makes it angry and turns a scoop of ice cream into a Ben and Jerry's binge on Friday night. But your sweet tooth doesn't have to be your enemy! There's no reason you can't be friends with a sweet tooth and satisfy the sugar craving without sacrificing nutrition. 1. Eat a fruit! Fruit is full of simple sugars similar to the ones in that cookie, so eating a cup of melon or a banana can fix your sugar craving while providing vitamins and fiber as an added bonus!
2. Grab a yogurt parfait. The fruit, yogurt, and granola in the parfait have natural sugars to give the desired sweet taste as well as protein and fiber to keep you full. . 3. Switch to dark chocolate. Dark chocolate lacks the high fat that milk chocolate has and includes more cocoa which acts as an antioxidant! 4. Finally, remember sweets have a place in a balanced diet! If you really want that cookie, then eat the cookie- just try not to eat the cookie everyday.
