OriginsAlmond Milk Almonds are native to the Middle East, India, and North Africa. They were brought to Europe over 1,000 years ago and later to California in the 19th century. Almond milk is first mentioned in the 13th century in Baghdadi and Egyptian cookbooks. In Europe, it became widely used during the Middle Ages in recipes for children or during Lent. Soy Milk Soy milk is first mentioned in China in the 1300s, and first appeared in the US in the 1800s. In the 1980s, new production techniques were introduced to create a flavor and consistency more milk-like. Oat Milk Oat milk was founded in Sweden in the 1980s using enzymes to liquify raw oats into a milk-like substance. A strong consumer demand led to shortages in 2018, leading to more factories being built in the US. Rice Milk The exact origin of rice milk is uncertain. The first known mention of the milk is in a cookbook from 1914, and the first rice milk factory was built in the US in 1921. The first popular rice milk brand was started in the 1990s.
