March is National Nutrition Month! To celebrate nutrition here in the dining halls we are throwing a month long event: MyPlate Spotlight. Each week in March we will be highlighting a different food group and shining a light on the healthful foods the Dining Halls offer. This Week: DAIRYThe daily recommendation for Dairy is to get 3 servings of about a cup each. Dairy is an incredibly important because of its high levels of calcium and vitamin D, however it is often neglected in college students. Right around 20 years old is when our bodies stop depositing calcium in your bones, which means that if you don't eat enough calcium right now then your bones won't have enough calcium not only right now but also 10, 20, 30 years from now.
Low fat or fat-free dairy options are great sources of calcium and vitamin D, while minimizing saturated fat which can be hard on your heart. In the dining halls you can get:
