By Rachael May, Student Nutritionist After lots of time and deliberation, kitchen appliances 6-10 have been ranked. There was blood. There was sweat. There were tears. Although I firmly believe some of these appliances should have made it up higher on the list (cough cough, rice cooker), I had to come to terms with ranking them lower. If you're interested in how we ranked the top 5 appliances, check out Lauren's blog here! #6 THE Rice CookerI never got to experience the luxury of the rice cooker until living in my first college apartment and oh baby let me tell you, there's no looking back. I cannot fathom the idea of going through 20 years of my life without this appliance and want every single person out there to go out and buy a rice cooker if they don't have one already. The rice cooker is able to make perfect, no fail rice, every...single...time, all in a matter of 20 minutes. They're small, they don't clutter your cabinet, and they're compact. For someone that eats rice at least three times a week, this appliance is vital. #7 Hand BeatersI will be the first to admit, there is no true replacement for the kitchen aid stand mixer. That being said, hand beaters are the next best alternative. They don't take up a lot of room, the beaters can be popped right in the dishwasher, they're substantially less in cost (~$30 vs ~$200) and they get the job done. From cookie dough to cake batter to mashed potatoes, hand beaters are a versatile kitchen tool that makes tasks so much easier than if they were done by hand. There are even times where I opt for hand beaters over the kitchen aid if I'm being lazy and want the job done quick. #8 Immersion BlenderThe immersion blender comes in at number 8 on this list because while handy, it is by no means a necessary kitchen appliance to own. I do a fair amount of cooking myself and I personally have never owned one and have never seen the need to purchase one, however, there are some die hard fans out there. Immersion blenders are great for making soups, whipped cream, vinaigrettes, milkshakes, and more for when you're too lazy to get the blender or food processor out. I would say they are ideal when cooking smaller portions, but a food processor and blender would be the way to go when cooking for more than just yourself. #9 Bread MakerOkay, I'll admit...I'm slightly biased. Growing up, my family was always making fresh loaves of bread with our bread maker for special occasion dinners like thanksgiving or birthday's. All you have to do is add the ingredients, press a button, and the bread maker does all the work for you from kneading to proofing to baking. While bread makers are in no means an essential kitchen appliance, they are great if you're a bread lover like me. #10 Ice Cream MakerRounding out at number 10 is the ice cream maker. Again, not an essential kitchen appliance but incredible to have to make your very own fresh ice cream at home. Unless you're churning it by hand, there is no other way to incorporate enough air into homemade ice cream to get it nice and fluffy without an ice cream maker. With the weather getting warmer outside, now is the perfect time to snatch up this sweet appliance!
