By Sydney Green, Senior Student NutritionistAs we all know University of Maryland has changed from a dining plan involving points to an all you can eat dining option. The whole process has rejuvenated the dining halls. There are now smoothies, flavored waters, ready-made stir fry, and more! With the new dining option a lot of things have changed. The biggest issues with dining hall veterans are the to-go containers. Yes, you used to be able to take your food to class or back to your room, but the benefit of that are minimal compared to the benefits of the all you can eat option.
By eliminating the to-go containers the University of Maryland is limiting not only the amount of food waste but the amount of food container waste. Anytime dining is more sustainable because we no longer accumulate the waste of 6 million to-go container. Not to mention the health benefits of eating meals at the table with social interaction. Research supports that eating food at the dinner table is correlated with having a lower body mass index and lower weight. That could make a difference between whether or not you gain the freshman fifteen. We all live busy lives. Believe me, I understand the college student struggle of having classes all day, attempting to have an active social life, and maintaining good grades. People may say that anytime dining is making people starve but that's not true. The carry out trays enabled food waste and created an unnecessary convince. I have had back to back classes and I currently have a back to back schedule. However if you have 15 minutes to walk from the School of Public Health to Tydings there is no way you are making a stop to grab a full meal to-go. Well, that is the case here. So give the anytime dining a chance you won't be disappointed.
