What is Blood Sugar?
Blood sugar levels are regulated by the hormones insulin and glucagon. Insulin, released by the pancreas, signals your cells to uptake glucose from your bloodstream for energy, effectively lowering your blood sugar level. However, frequent consumption of carbohydrate-heavy meals provides you with insulin resistance, and your cells become less responsive to insulin. As a result, glucose accumulates in your bloodstream while your cells are simultaneously starved for energy. Is Blood Sugar Important?Blood sugar balancing isn't just important for those with (pre)diabetes, it's important for everyone! Different foods and activities can impact your mood, and blood sugar is an important contributing factor. In fact, disrupted blood sugar levels can lead to irritability, brain fog, and anxiety. On top of that, you may experience cravings and energy spikes. When balanced, however, mood and energy levels stabilize, fueling you through your day. Blood Sugar Balancing BasicsThere are easy ways to be better for your blood sugar. 1. Minimize processed carbohydrate intake (crackers, bread, soda, candy, granola bars). These are easily broken down so they don't keep you full, and they may lead to blood sugar spikes and drops. Instead, choose whole food carbohydrates (rice, oats, beans, fruits, veggies) which are high in fiber and nutrient-dense. 2. Balance carbohydrates with protein and fat, which aid in blood sugar balancing and glucose absorption. Make sure to include fiber as well! 3. Exercise, even just by taking a short walk after eating. Exercising allows your cells to uptake glucose, even in the absence of insulin. Exercising also increases insulin sensitivity. 4. Get enough sleep, as poor sleep increases insulin resistance.
