By Abby Stultz, Dietetic Intern I don’t know about you, but every time I get on social media my feed is flooded with gorgeous images of meals people are cooking. While it’s fun to try different recipes, the reality is most of us don’t have time during the week to allot 2+ hours to make a meal-- especially as college students. The good news is it is possible to throw together a healthy, delicious meal in a fraction of the time! Here are my tips on getting back to the basics of meal making:
Frozen Everything: Veggies, fruit, meat, you name it! This allows items to keep longer in storage, which means less grocery store trips and food spoilage, and more meals ready in a pinch! Also, you basically have a serving of protein and veggies in a matter of minutes! Many frozen vegetables nowadays can be found in “steam-in-bag” packaging, meaning all you have to do is throw them in the microwave for a quick serving of veggies. Keep your eyes out for what frozen foods are on sale at your local market! Minute Starches: There are so many brands and flavors of minute rice and even pasta packages you will always be able to have a healthy starch and mix it up. White and sweet potatoes also come in microwavable packaging for a baked potato in less than 10 minutes! ...And a little Flavor on top: Get creative and try different spices, vinegars and oils when cooking and seasoning your meals. Anything tastes great cooked or drizzled with olive oil, and balsamic vinegar adds a little punch, without being overbearing (just don’t use too much!). A few of my favorite seasonings that I find I can really use to flavor anything are Adobo, Old Bay, Everything But the Bagel, and Garlic & Herb!
