By: Elizabeth Katsion, Student Nutritionist In this day in age, the food industry has perfected the use of well known celebrities to help sell their products. And for good reason! When consumers see their favorite celebrities endorsing a product they are more likely to buy it. I know that when I was younger, I would buy anything with Hillary Duff's face on it (any Lizzie McGuire fans here?). Unfortunately, the products these celebrities are associating themselves with are not the healthiest. 70% of the time these ads are for fast food restaurants, soda beverages, or other sugary snack foods Psy is one of the few celebrities advertising a healthy food; pistachio nuts. Others like Justin Timberlake and Pitbull are faces for Dr. Pepper, Pepsi and McDonald's. What is about seeing a celebrity with a product that makes everyone want to use the same product? It could have something to do with this thought process, ."if Taylor Swift drinks Diet Coke and looks like that, maybe I should drink Diet Coke too". The food industry spends around 2 million dollars a year for these advertisements to the youth demographic, and this could be a leading cause to childhood obesity. So next time you go to buy a food product, ask yourself; are you buying this because of a celebrity? In which case it may be best to reevaluate the food choice.
