By Alexis Mateer, Dietetic Intern Do you ever feel like you don’t know what to make for dinner? Do you ever have extra veggies in the fridge that you don’t know how to use before spoilage? You are not the only one. It can be challenging and intimidating trying to put together healthy, quick meals, using the ingredients you have in your fridge and pantry. This is especially true if you are a novice in the kitchen like me. Luckily, there is a lot of technology out there that can help us. Recipe suggestion apps exist for this purpose. Today, I will share a little bit about one of these apps, called MyFoodways. Their tagline is “Weeknight friendly dinners. Your way.” The app offers, “Recipes that adapt to suit your preferences and what’s in the fridge.” The app is for ios or Android users and is free. When I first downloaded the app, prompts popped up that asked me about how I like to eat. The first prompt was, “How often do you eat… meat, fish, dairy?” Answers to these three questions are on a sliding scale. This allowed me to slide the cursor and choose an answer that lies somewhere within the range of “Never” to “Everyday”. The next prompt was, “How important is it to you to… save time when cooking, eat seasonally, and reduce food waste?” Answers to these questions are in the same fashion. Lastly, the app asked, “Are there any ingredients that you’d rather avoid?” This enabled me to highlight any potential allergens or food intolerances that I might have. Then I signed up using my email address!
The app is helpful because it allows users to choose from personalized recipe suggestions, or search specific food items. So based on the answers from the first couple prompts, the app came up with initial recipe ideas for me. I can either choose to browse these and look for dinner ideas, or I can search for specific recipes based on ingredients I have in my fridge. The app is also great because recipes are flexible. Each recipe lists the ingredients required. However, if I don’t have one or more of the ingredients, I can click the arrow next to that ingredient and get a list of possible substitutes, or alternatives. I can also favorite and save recipes I like in my “digital cookbook” on the app. MyFoodways focuses on perfect portions, eating within the season, wasting less, and spending less. For example, portion sizes are adjustable for adults and children. Also, the app will suggest recipes made with fresh, seasonal ingredients. Lastly, the app gives tips on how to best store ingredients, and how to make the most out of leftovers. You can visit the website: https://myfoodways.com/ to get more information!
