By: Jillian Pancio, Student Nutritionist February is American Heart Month. Cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of death in the United States. This month is a time to raise awareness on the importance of heart health. Wear Red Day is February 3rd, and is a time where everyone is encouraged to wear red to support the 1 in 3 woman who lose their life each year to heart disease. A woman is killed by heart disease nearly every 80 seconds. These deaths can be prevented if people become more conscious about their lifestyle.
What can you do to reduce your risk of heart disease? Take simple steps in your cooking such as to flavor your food with spices instead of salt. Also, try to incorporate physical activity into your daily routine, whether it is walking your dog or going to a yoga class, get up and move. Make conscious decisions about your diet, there is a place for every food in moderation. Finally, ask your doctor about your blood pressure and if you have high cholesterol, learn your numbers and know where you stand!
