By Danny Turner, UMD Dietetic Intern If you’re like me, you first moved out of your parents’ house with just enough cooking knowledge to make cereal and milk for breakfast, a PB&J for lunch, and instant ramen noodles for dinner. You may also find the idea of learning your way around the kitchen pretty intimidating. It can help to start small, and learn to use one thing at a time. This is a quick guide to using your microwave. You’ve probably used microwaves to reheat leftovers or heat up frozen meals, but they're surprisingly versatile. We’ll talk about using your microwave safely, dispel some myths you may have heard about them, and give ideas for things you can do and make with your microwave!

There are a ton more recipes you can find online to make in your microwave, many of which use very healthy ingredients! You can even cook full meals from whole ingredients. Hopefully now the microwave looks more like a legitimate cooking tool, and not just a way to heat up last night’s leftovers.
