Melissa TalleyDietetic Intern Farmers markets are one of the oldest forms of small marketing by farmers and are growing in local communities. A farmers market usually consists of a group of farmers and vendors who come together to sell their products. Products consist of fruits, vegetables, meats, breads, baked goods, bath products and more! The location is usually a public place such as a park or parking lot and typically occurs once a week. Why should you go to a farmers market instead of just driving up the street to the grocery store? Farmers markets have many positive qualities and here are some reasons why you should get out to your local farmers market today! The Produce Farmers markets have a variety of vendors that offer many delicious fruits and vegetables. They have fresh produce every week that are not processed and are not grown with pesticides or hormones. Some produce is even harvested the day it is out on the market! Supporting Local Business Any product purchased at a farmers market whether its fruit, meat, vegetables, etc., are directly supporting the small businesses in your area. By supporting the family farmers, you are giving them a better return for their products and avoiding the hard competition with the larger market. The Community By visiting your local farmers market, you can make an enjoyable experience with family and friends. With the great atmosphere, you can enjoy yourself and learn new things about the community, meet the farmers, and understand where your food comes from. Protect the Environment Food that you consume from the grocery store has usually traveled a long distance before reaching your hands. The shipping of these products consists of a good amount of oil resulting in harm to the environment. By supporting farmers markets, you are supporting a shorter travel time as well as products that are grown to minimally impact the earth.
