For Week 2 of our MyPlate Spotlight event, we are focusing on fruits and vegetables! With a partnership from SGA we are also featuring our first Healthy Hacks Post which is a healthful meal students can make and get from the Dining Halls. This week- to keep the Spotlight on fruits- we have a yogurt bowl with granola and fruit which not only hits 3 food groups but provides great sources of protein and carbohydrates to keep you energized in your day!
Fruits and vegetables are two of the most mentioned food groups when people talk about "eating healthy" and for a good reason! These food groups are jam packed with tons of vitamins, minerals and nutrients. They give Vitamins A, C, E, and B Vitamins as well as iron, calcium, zinc, magnesium, and tons of fiber. To keep with our emphasis on the MyPlate, about half of your plate should be fruits and vegetables. It's also important to try for a variety of colors in your vegetables and fruits! Oranges are packed with Vitamin C while bananas provide potassium- you need both in your body so it's important to eat both! A word on fiber: fiber is non-nutritive. Meaning that fiber provides no calories, vitamins, or minerals. It does provide bulk though, it helps to make you feel full with fewer calories and works your digestive system. It's fantastic for cardiovascular health too, and fruits and vegetables are high in fiber! In the Dining Halls:
