By Lauren Incarnato, Student Nutritonist If you're like me, there are some days where you just can't find that extra bit of energy to workout or get an assignment done. Like most other college students, the biggest and most obvious solution to this is caffeine. On the other side, other people do not like coffee and will resort to energy drinks for that needed boost. Aside from coffee or energy drinks, there are dozens of energy-boosting foods that are not only effective in increasing energy and alertness but are also beneficial to other areas of health as well! It is important to note that while carbohydrates provide energy, consuming chips, or simple carbohydrates may result in short-lived energy, and can eventually lead to a "sugar crash." Instead of reaching for a bag of chips, gravitate towards foods high in fiber, protein, or complex carbohydrates. These foods provide steady and more consistent energy than coffee, energy drinks, or sugary foods. One of the best ways I have found to boost and maintain energy is staying hydrated. You would be surprised by the difference drinking 64-80 oz of water in a day makes. One of my biggest study hacks is bringing my full 32 oz water bottle to the library with me and making sure that I am constantly drinking water as I study and refilling it a few times while at the library. I find that the more water I drink, the more I am able to focus and I am not nearly as sluggish as I would be without it. Try to increase your water intake everyday to not only assure you are staying hydrated, but also to increase your energy as well! Some other really great foods that provide energy for the body include:
So next time you feel like you need a boost, try a more nutritious alternative to the coffee route! As a coffee lover myself, it is difficult sometimes to gravitate towards foods for energy instead of conveniently drinking a quick coffee. Even just substituting one coffee per week for one of these energy boosting foods is a great way to start. By changing this one aspect, you could be setting up habits towards a healthier lifestyle full of sustained energy!
