By: Emma Slattery, Student NutritionistWith warm weather coming out and summer break a short turn around the corner, "healthy eating" is a hot topic on campus at the moment. Thanks to fitness gurus on Instagram and celebrity personal trainers we have an idea of what "healthy eating" in this moment looks like: lots of green salads, fruits, lean proteins, shakes and smoothies, etc. You know what I'm talking about. But in all this health craze, where do your fun foods fit in to your diet? In a pursuit of "health", your fun foods: { ice cream, brownies, mozzarella sticks, and tater tots } often get cut out completely. Is it possible to improve your diet and keep your fun foods? YES Don't get me wrong, all that green stuff and lean protein has tons of nutritional benefits. But is all that green and lean food satisfying and satiating? Do you resent a new diet plan when you go back for a banana when all you want is a cookie? Do you leave the dining hall still wanting a cookie? Because if you really want a cookie, a banana is NOT gonna fix the craving. A really great rule of thumb is the 80:20 rule: 80% of your diet should be healthy and nutritious for your body, and 20% of your diet should be fun foods which fuel your soul. What does this look like? A plate of salad with a side of french fries Vegetable stir fry with a small ice cream Eating a dinner with grains, protein, and vegetables and finishing it off with a cookie! While a cookie may not be the best basis for your diet, it is certainly a strong addition!
