by Rachel Parr, B.S., Dietetic Intern Farmers Markets are great for many reasons. Of course, they are a great source for fresh, affordable produce that's in season. What I found interesting was the diversity between the markets here and my hometown (only 5 hours south of CP). Many fruits and vegetables are native in Maryland that aren't commonly found in other areas of the country. Going to a Farmers Market is the best way to learn about the produce available locally. They enhance a sense of community. One thing that I've always loved about Farmers Markets is having the opportunity to talk to the farmers that dedicate their lives to growing the food we eat. Farmers are also incredibly knowledgeable about produce and are happy to share their insight. Alongside the farmers, Farmers Markets connect you with other patrons that have a shared interest with you, and its fun to have conversations with fellow market goes--something you don't typically do at a grocery store. Farmers Markets are about giving back. Did you know that participants of SNAP (formerly Food Stamps) get double their money at Farmers Markets when buying produce? That means that the USDA is promoting the use of government aid towards locally grown fruits and vegetables. Want to check out the nearest Farmers Markets?
