By: Tuesday Brooks, Dietetic Intern If you’ve been anywhere near social media lately, you already know that people are freaking out about Starbucks’ limited-time Unicorn Frappuccino. According to Starbucks’ news release it is “made with a sweet dusting of pink powder blended into a crème Frappuccino with mango syrup and layered with a pleasantly sour blue powder topping” and was only available last week. When I first heard about the new frappe, I thought it was such a cute idea! Plus, I love mango flavor, so it seemed right up my alley. Needless to say, I was pretty pumped to try it out.
Apparently not everyone shared my excitement. Scrolling through social media, I saw post after post bashing the new frappe. It’s too sour. It doesn’t contain coffee. It’s has too much sugar. It’s hard for the baristas to make. It’s SO unhealthy. Blah blah blah. It made me sad to see that something I thought would be so fun become something that people were so angry about. Of course, the (almost) dietitian in me clung most tightly to the various health complaints. There are no “good” or “bad” foods. All foods are okay if you eat them in moderation. Vilifying certain foods or food groups will only fuel unhealthy relationships with food and can lead to disordered eating. You will not get fat, die, or develop diabetes (people on the internet are crazy) from trying a pink and blue Frappuccino. As goes with all sweet treats, including the Unicorn Frappuccino, it's totally okay to indulge and try a unique treat every now and then. Although the Unicorn Frappuccino is gone forever, I hope to see a different reaction to the next fad food. These fun, crazy, fad foods are meant to be just that…fun! So let’s all join in the excitement and enjoy them!
