By Emily Glass, UMD Dietetic Intern Our bodies need proteins to survive! But did you know we can get proteins from more than just meat! Looking to try something new? Are you vegetarian or vegan? When choosing plant based proteins, it is important to plan your meals to make sure you are getting complete proteins. Meats contain all 9 essential amino acids. Where as, beans and legumes are often incomplete and must be paired with other food items. Make sure you are always getting the most out of your meals. Many people choose plant based proteins for a variety of reasons. But few know that you must combine many of these foods with other products to get all the nutrients you need. Beans and lentils can be combined with a whole grain to make them complete. Here is a list of some of the complete plant based proteins:
