By: Emma Slattery, Student NutritionistDuring February the University Health Center is celebrating Love Your Body Month. And in honor of Love Your Body Month I have a much less formal post about loving your body and a few of my favorite nutritional blogs that support body positivity. To get the ball rolling let me introduce the concept of Health at Every Size. Being healthy does not necessarily mean being a size 2 or a size 0. Being healthy means adopting healthful habits, a healthful diet and exercise regimen, and maintaining mental health. Being healthy does not equate to a certain body shape or size. It has been shown again and again that there are different body types and the ectomorph, the model-esque body type, is a MINORITY of the population. What does this mean? If most of the population were to try to adopt this thin lean body size, they would be practicing unhealthy behaviors like over-exercising and under eating to push their body beyond its bounds. Essentially, health is an individualized concept. My favorite blogger and current obsession is Robyn at The Real Life RD. Her post WANT TO OR SHOULD DO? addresses the individuality of health. An example she gives is running, not everyone loves to run so if you don't love to run then don't! Find an exercise that you love to do and do that instead. People so often find themselves adopting "healthy" habits because they feel like they should, even though the don't want to. The key to health and happiness is to find a lifestyle that intersects both for you. Another favorite is Kylie at Imma Eat That and her post My Best Body Image Days. She describes a healthy body image and the difference between a body image linked to thinness and a body image linked to appreciation of everything your body can do. A great quote is "The goal is to be healthy, not to conform to society". To round out my blog review we have Avocado A Day Nutrition with Rachel and The Problem With the Bikini Body. In Rachel's words, "the only things you need for a bikini body are a bikini and a body". The idea of trying to get the perfect thin toned bikini body ends up trapping so many women into a cycle of dieting and body shaming. Rachel explains this so much better than I ever could.
This month not only check out the blogs and the events at the UHC but also love your body. The body that gets you to class every day, powers through late night study sessions, the body that gets up day after day after day again. All bodies are amazing in all shapes and sizes so take a second today and love yours <3.
