By: Elizabeth Katsion, Student Nutritionist Next semester, the dining halls are getting a makeover. Instead of using our swipes to purchase food a la carte, Dining Services is using a new Anytime Dining Plan and a SAFRON Morpho Biometric Scanner to allow students access into the dining halls for all you can eat meals. These scanners will read 4 fingers to unlock the turnstile and let the student enter the dining hall. However, the scanners will not store fingerprints, they only take partial pieces to generate a code that the scanner will recognize. Here is what the entrance to the dining halls make look like. The biometric scanner in the front where you'll scan your hand, and a turnstile in between you and the inside. This combats against tailgating or students using other swipes to avoid paying with their own plan. Students will still be able to use their swipes in the convenience stores, STAMP Union Building, and in the cafe's around campus. To be ready for next semester, sign up to register your hand for the new system in one of the dining halls the last few weeks of the semester. To learn more, visit UMD's Dining Service website!
